Lisa L. Owens

During a ten-year in-house career in the children’s/K–12 educational industry, I learned publishing from the ground up, starting as proofreading coordinator/copy chief, working up to full editor, and eventually landing as senior editor for a Seattle-based publisher of internationally acclaimed research-based SEL programs.
While still in-house, I regularly took on freelance editing projects from children’s book, trade magazine, and adult-market nonfiction publishers, and in 2002 I made the switch to full-time freelancing.
These days, typical projects include editing books and other materials for the children’s trade and educational markets, coaching children’s authors, writing articles and essays, and providing manuscript evaluations. I also edit books for the adult market in such genres as contemporary fiction, historical fiction, psychological thriller, mystery, romance, business, how-to, and cookbook.
Over the years I’ve had editorial input of various types, and from concept to market, on thousands of published products.
As a children’s author, I’ve written 100+ works for young readers, including early readers, graphic novels, middle grade fiction, historical explorations, biographies, teen self-help, and STEM books. I’ve been an active member of EFA since 2000, serving the organization at the national level as education chair (2004–2012), creator/admin of EFA’s Facebook page (2009–2013), and as EFA exhibit captain (various conferences 2000–2020). I’ve also volunteered locally as chapter coordinator for Chicagoland (2002–2004) and Seattle (2011–2014). Other professional affiliations include Authors Guild, AWP, PNWA, and SCBWI. Currently, I serve as nonfiction coordinator for SCBWI’s Western Washington chapter.
