Academic copyeditors play a pivotal role in the precise dissemination of scientific research, bridging the gap between complex findings and their intended audience, whether fellow scholars or the wider community. Find out how you can get started in this challenging and rewarding field and discover the pathway to a fulfilling and potentially lucrative career.
This eight-module self-paced course is a comprehensive introduction to academic copyediting and the skills necessary to become an effective editor in the academic field. It is targeted at people who have intermediate-level copyediting knowledge and want to move into academic copyediting, but are not necessarily academics.
Academic copyediting requires a specialized skill set that extends beyond traditional copyediting. It necessitates familiarity with specific style guides (such as APA, MLA, and Chicago), proficiency in formatting references, ensuring consistency in citations, and understanding specific conventions and mechanical aspects peculiar to academic writing.
Upon completion of this course, you will feel confident taking on academic copyediting work and you will have the knowledge, resources, and skills required to
- explain the role and importance of an academic copyeditor
- identify the different academic fields
- understand the academic publishing process
- identify common types of academic documents
- apply basic conventions and mechanical aspects used in academic writing
- review, revise, and improve the clarity, consistency, and accuracy of academic content for different Englishes and different authors
- adhere to style guides and referencing requirements
- start working with academic clients
- be aware of ethical considerations in academic copyediting
Modules will contain small quizzes to self-check your progress, along with some practical exercises, with model examples for comparison, to apply what you have learned.
Access to APA 7th Publication Manual and Chicago Manual of Style 17 is beneficial but not required for this course.
This course is appropriate for those who already have formal training in copyediting and/or intermediate-level experience. An academic background is not essential for this introductory course.
